How car insurance works in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has a competitive auto insurance market: since April 2008, each insurer sets its own rates, with the approval of the state's Division of Insurance. The same driver can therefore get very different prices from one company to the next, which is why comparing several quotes pays off.

Insurers reach drivers in three ways. Some sell directly online or by phone. Others work through exclusive agents who only represent one company. Many rely on independent agents, who can quote several companies at once. The Division of Insurance requires every company licensed to write private passenger auto insurance to offer an online quote tool or a phone number for quotes, although some of them will send you to an agent.

What insurers can and cannot use to price your policy

Massachusetts is unusual: insurers may not use your sex, marital status, race, creed, national origin, religion, age, occupation, income, education, homeownership or credit information, either to decide whether to insure you or to set your rate. The only age-based rule is a discount for drivers 65 and older, which the law requires.

What they can use: your years of driving experience, your accidents and traffic violations over the last six years, the car you drive, and where it is garaged. Garaging location can affect your rate, but it cannot be a reason to refuse you a policy. If no company will insure you, the Massachusetts Automobile Insurance Plan will assign one for up to three years.

Three rules that change how you compare quotes

  1. Same coverage, same limitsAsk each company for identical coverages, limits and deductibles. A cheaper quote with lower limits is not a cheaper policy.
  2. Same policy termMost policies run one year, some six months. Every company must offer you a one-year term if you ask, so compare like with like.
  3. The basic Bodily Injury coverage stops at the state linePart 1 only covers accidents in Massachusetts and not your passengers. To be covered elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada, you need the optional Part 5. Check that every quote includes it if you drive out of state.

FAQ

Is car insurance required in Massachusetts?

Yes. You cannot register a car in Massachusetts without auto insurance, and the policy must include four compulsory coverages: Bodily Injury to Others, Personal Injury Protection, Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto and Damage to Someone Else's Property. See Massachusetts car insurance requirements.

What are the minimum car insurance limits in Massachusetts in 2025?

Since July 1, 2025, the minimums are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for Bodily Injury to Others, the same for Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto, $30,000 for Damage to Someone Else's Property, and $8,000 of Personal Injury Protection.

Can Massachusetts insurers use my age or credit score to set my rate?

No. Massachusetts prohibits insurers from using sex, marital status, race, creed, national origin, religion, age, occupation, income, education, homeownership and credit information from a consumer report, both to decide whether to insure you and to price your policy. The one exception for age is the discount for drivers 65 or older. Your years of driving experience and your driving record can still be used.

How long does an accident affect my car insurance in Massachusetts?

An insurer's merit rating plan cannot use an accident or traffic violation that is more than six years old, and cannot raise your premium for one for more than five years. Under the state Safe Driver Insurance Plan, incidents in the oldest year of the six-year period carry no surcharge points.

Can I switch car insurance companies at renewal without a penalty?

Yes. Once you receive the renewal invoice showing your new premium and discounts, you have 30 days to move to another company without a penalty. You pay your former insurer only for the days before your new coverage starts.
